Specialist to outline best way forward for unions

In preparation for the upcoming Essential Services Tribunal scheduled to start in early May, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize has obtained the services of a renowned trade union advocate activist, George DePeana, Ph.D., to make sure the prerequisites for a fair hearing are in place.

DePeana told Reporter in light of what he has seen, B.T.L. did not act in accordance with the laws that govern industrial matters.

It is our view that the actions taken by the employer is certainly not in keeping with good, sound industrial relations, he said, There appears to be no grounds to justify this, he said. To terminate people without cause is indicative of an attitude by the employer to take advantage of the workers.

Secretary General George Frazer explained what the unions hoped to accomplish from DePeanas visit.

ShOA Still Working Without Contract

The Sheriff Officer's Association (ShOA), which represents the corrections officers of Nassau County, has been without a contract for over two years, with no meaningful negotiations and no end in sight. To try and obtain a contract for the 1,100 hard-working and dedicated Nassau County correction officers, ShOA has been trying to secure binding arbitration as a method to resolve our contract disputes with Nassau County.

To fully understand our need for binding arbitration, one must understand the bargaining history between Correction Officers and the County of Nassau. In August of 2000, ShOA negotiated a fair deal with then-County Executive Thomas Gulotta, only to have it rejected by the county legislature. One year later in August 2001, after being without a contract for almost four years, the legislature finally approved a contract.
